My dad served on the BAYA around '50 -52 (I was born in '52). I have a picture that I just framed from 01/07/50 of the boat's crew and a picture done by a photographer named Olson, of the boat cruising under the Golden Gate Bridge. I remember going out to the boat with our good family friend, "Pappy" Morrell and getting the "run of the boat" when I must have been 6 or 7 years old. I have other pictures of my dad on the BAYA that I need to go through and will scan them if able. My dad passed 3 years ago as did "Pappy' at least 10 years ago.
Miss them both. I'm a retire Air Force Boom Operator (KC-135) working for the AF as a civilian. Must be in the blood.
Great site. Hope to hear from someone.

When my father died, I sent a copy of his obituary and a short note to the addresses that I found in his personal telephone book. One of his friends sent me a photograph of my parents, himself, and his wife that was taken in New York City after the war. He told me that he served on the USS Bergall with my father, and he told me about the upcoming 2004 National Submarine Convention in Saratoga Springs, New York, which is about a 3-hour card ride from where I live.
My wife and I brought several pictures that my father had given me when we went to the convention, to show to anyone who may have known my father.
I met the webmaster of the USS Bergall web pages. He used my pictures to create a web page.
If you type the following
USS Bergall SS 320 memories, William Bort
you will be able to see my father's pictures and read the wonderful captions.
My father was transferred to the USS Baya from the Bergall. One of his pictures is identical to one that appears on the Baya web page. He is the second man behind the sailor holding the flashlight in the first row of "Baya Beer Bash."
My father lived to be 85. I would love hearing from anyone who may have ever known him.

I remember Mazatlan, but for a different reason. I was qualifying and "Dink" at the time... While you guys were partying, I was drawing High Pressure Air Systems, and learning to start a Diesel. I served on Baya until we decommed her as a Radioman Seaman (SS), then went to Radio "A" and "C" School after which I reported as RM3(SS)to the USS Patrick Henry SSBN599 Blue Crew... Anybody remember the flooding in the forward engine room coming back from Pearl after dry dock? Main induction valves shouldn't have holes in them... Boy, you guys sure brought back a flood of emotion and memories. Great site, I welcome emails from any of you.

I was on the decommissioning crew of this fine vessel in 1972. I served on many different nuclear submarines, but this boat was special. She was the last of the WWII diesel boats to be decommissioned. It really was a special honor to earn a set of dolhins while serving on the Baya. I think of the Baya whenever I pass her old NEL berth in San Diego bay. I never thought I'd miss standing topside mid-watch along side that pier, but I do. Greetings to all Baya shipmates. Today my daughter, Elizabeth Jarvis-Shean, who had happened upon the website, forwarded the link to me. But I was a Machinst Mate in the A gang and worked with Charlie and a few others that escape me at the moment. I see Burkie has signed in as well as Rosie and Bob, I wonder what happened to Krudwig.... he came on with me and was an Engineman....also if anyone remembers Tim Taaje he was a seaman wanting to be a UT.... Well I hooked up with him after he got out and he lived by me for a bit..till he moved back East to Carolina where he was killed in a car wreck...bless his soul.
anyways glad to see this site...>Great job on it!

I had the privlage of being a crew member of the Baya,But only for a short time. In 1964 I applied for Submarine duty .I was a CS3 so I was snaped up fast .At the time I was on an LST in Vietnam ,so when I receaved my Order I was told I would not go until my regular rotation date .So in 1965 I was sent to San Diego to The Pomodon ,The only problem was the Pomodon was in West pac,and I wasnt. So instead of sending me back to West Pac they put me on the Baya TAD ,So after a couple of weeks and the crew found out I knew my way around the Galley they decided to keep me .But alas the old Raton found out that I was an extra body And I was transfered to Raton.Even thongh I was only thirty days on Baya I have Some good memories ,especially Fourth of July weekend at Catalina Island and the Battle of Avalon Bay .Some day I may retell the Store of That weekened with me and a cook named Easy. Good luck to you all. Bob Baker MS1(SS)Retired

My father, Reid M. Bennett was an Ensign on the original crew and served on the first 2 war patrols. He was taken off after the 2nd one due to coming down with asthma and taken to Australia. He is living in Dallas, TX (972-490-5727) but does not have an email address. He may be able to give you some info on the launching and first couple of patrols.

My father, Joseph H. Cornelius, was
on the USS Baya in 1955 as an
Engineman Assistant. He tranferred
to the Sea Fox at some point in 56. I
am working on a scrapbook of his
submarine days and am interested
in locating photographs of the crew
during that time or especially of the
Baya itself. This will be a Christmas
present for him. I need a really good
8x10 for the album. Looking for
actual photo I could have a copy neg
made of, not computer printed. If
there is any other information you
feel would be appropriate for him to
have in this album, please let me
know.
Thanks for any help any visitors or
the owner of this site can offer me. I
have next to nothing for the Baya and
a ton of stuff for the Sea Fox.

Hi, my name is Cathy(Curry)Higgins and I am the daughter of Thomas R. Curry. My Mom says she has some of Dad's pictures put away from when he was in the Navy and will give them to me. If they are clear I will scan them and send then to you. Unfortunately, my Dad passed away on 1/16/00. I miss him a lot. The year before he passed away we tried looking up the USS Baya on the internet and found a few things about it and some pictures but I wish he was here now to see this great web site you put together. He would have loved to see all of this and be able to communicate with his old buddies. When I get the pictures I will send some.

My grandfather, Thomas Curry served on the USS BAYA during WWII. If anyone knew him or has any interesting stories please email me. As far as I know he worked on the engines, but he never really told me much about the war. I would appreciate any information or photos. Thank you to all who served and fought for our freedom!

Hi,
I served on USS Chivo SS341. It was commissioned just as the WWII was ending. The Chivo served many special missions in support of the mopping up operations in the Pacific and of the ensuing cold war cat and mouse operations. The Chivo also served as observer in the Atomic Bomb test in the Pacific.
I enjoyed your site and will pass on the URL to the Chivo site webmaster.
Keep up the good work.

Nice job on the web site. Im trying to locate IC2SS Burkett. He was on the Baya In 1971 & 1972. Ive had his Baya Dolphin belt buckle for the past 29 years and thought he'd treasure it more than I do. If anyone out there knows his location Id really appreciate hearing from you. When I qualified submarines he was the only one at the qual party that had a pair of dolphins for me to drink. Those were the days.

My uncle Andrew Charles Fischer better known as "Butchy" was stationed aboard the USS Baya. He passed away while stationed in San Diego in May of 1971. His was a EN1. Was wondering if anyone knew him or had any good sea stories for me. My mother was young when he passed away my grandparents are both deceased now. All we had was a picture of the ship, and I'd like to add to it.
Hope someone out there can help me.

My father is a USS BAYA plankholder. He served on her throughout WWII, first as Engineer and later as Executive Officer.
I found USSBAYA.COM when surfing the net a few days ago, and find the information fascinating.
My father had left the Baya before I was born. But as an Ensign in San Diego in 1972, I was able to tour USS BAYA as she was being readied for decommissioning. USSBAYA.com permits a renewed visit to this part of my father's Navy career.

I served aboard the USS BAYA AGSS318 from July 1958 until March 1961. I earned my dolphins on this boat. In fact, it was the only sub that I served on. It was during those years that she was cut into aft of the forward torpedo room and a section was added called the Lorad room. Sure would like to hear from anyone that served aboard her at the same time I did. I was an Electronic Tecnician.

Glad to find this sight. Served on the Baya the later part of 63 most of 64 before mustering out in Oct. 64. Transferred from USS Raton AGSS 270 to the Baya in San Francisco when the "Rat" went into dry-dock. Made one westpac trip up through the Aleutian Islands to Japan. Like to have lost the Captain over the side, if had not been for the port side lookout grabbing him, he would have been a goner. Still remember the Russian trawler following us most of the time, may still have some pictures of those times but it has been awhile and many moves since then.
I still stand tall because of my on the "Boats".

I am an Australian Navy Submarine Veteran. We hosted a visit by the much modified BAYA doing some research / trials with us in the Coral Sea about 1970. Had some great times together.
Remember "Ready Kilowatts" was a Chief I shared a meal with, not mention hoisting a serious amount of singing syrup! Love hear from BAYA sailors.
